Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

Basic Anatomy of a Skateboard:

  • Deck: The flat board that the skater stands on. 
  • Trucks: The front and rear axle assemblies that connect the wheels to the deck, allowing for turning. 
  • Wheels: Usually made of polyurethane, they provide the rolling motion. 
  • Nose: The front end of the skateboard. 
  • Tail: The rear end of the skateboard. 
  • Bearings: Round metal discs that fit inside the wheels, mounting them to the axle. 
  • Griptape: The rough, adhesive material on the top of the deck for grip. 
  • Rail: The edge of the skateboard, or a metal rail obstacle. 
  • Wheelbase: The distance between the front and back wheels. 

Common Skateboarding Tricks & Manoeuvres:

  • Ollie: Jumping the board off the ground using a combination of foot and body movement. 
  • Grind: Sliding the trucks along a rail or other obstacle. 
  • Slide: Sliding the underside of the deck along a rail or other obstacle. 
  • Manual: Lifting either the front or back wheels off the ground without the board touching the ground. 
  • Flip Tricks: Tricks where the board rotates in the air, like kickflips and heelflips. 
  • Kickflip: Flipping the board 360 degrees in the air by kicking it with the foot. 
  • Heelflip: Flipping the board 360 degrees in the air by using the heel of the foot. 
  • Caballerial (Cab): A fakie ollie where the skater rotates 360 degrees. 
  • Nollie: An ollie performed using the front foot instead of the back. 
  • Manual: Lifting either the front or back wheels off the ground. 
  • Dropping In: Entering a ramp or bowl from the top edge. 
  • Frontside/Backside: Describing the direction a skater turns during a trick (frontside is turning with the front of their body facing the ramp, backside is turning with their back facing the ramp). 

Other Important Skateboarding Terms:

  • Regular/Goofy: Describing a skater’s stance (regular = left foot forward, goofy = right foot forward).
  • Switch: Skating with the opposite foot forward.
  • Fakie: Riding backward with the tail of the board facing forwards.
  • Bail: Intentionally kicking the board away from a fall.
  • Sick/Rad: Describing something impressive or awesome.
  • Gnarly: Originally a surfing term, now used to describe something awesome, amazing, or dangerous.
  • Stoked: Excited or happy.
  • Sketchy: Describing something not perfect or poorly executed.
  • Sesh: A skateboarding session.
  • Skatepark: An area designed for skateboarding.
  • Bowl: A shaped pool-like area with transitions for skating.
  • Pyramid: A pyramid-shaped obstacle.
  • Rail: A metal rail obstacle.
  • Quarterpipe: A quarter section of a pipe.
  • Coping: The protruding edge of a ramp.
  • Carve: Making turns on the transitions of a ramp.
  • Bonk: A short nose grind involving a quick tap of the front truck.
  • Crooked Grind: A grind where the nose of the board is angled down.
  • Newb/Newbie: A beginner.
