Thrill facilitates hands-on raft-building events for corporate groups, conference delegates and staff teams. People exchange ideas, learn construction techniques, organise resources and work towards a common goal. Every rope connection becomes a conversation about how the team works.
Choose a dry-land build, a conference-room challenge or an outdoor program with a supervised water component where approved. We adapt the story, materials, scale and learning focus to the people taking part.
Your scenario · Rescue the Expedition
Your expedition has reached a sheltered shore. The supply route is interrupted, resources are limited and a stranded cargo needs a new way home. Your crew’s task: design a raft, organise the build and present a plan everyone can trust.
This is a fictional survival story, delivered as a facilitated team challenge. Drawing on the resourcefulness that makes films such as Cast Away memorable, it invites people to imagine, experiment and support one another. The adventure is in the decisions you make together.
Will you rush into construction or agree a design first? Who notices the missing detail? How will you respond when your facilitator introduces a new constraint? The story gives ordinary workplace behaviours a fresh and engaging setting.
For an indoor event, the mission concludes with an engineering presentation and dry-land assessment. At a suitable waterfront site, an approved supervised launch can provide the finale. The rescue objective uses a scenario or cargo prop, never a person placed in distress.

01 · Conference-room challenge
Turn an approved conference room, function space or covered venue into expedition headquarters. Teams plan and build with an appropriately sized kit, then explain and review their design. A useful option when time, access or weather favours an indoor event.
02 · Shoreline build & test
Build on an approved beach, lakeside lawn or sheltered foreshore. Work through design, construction and facilitator checks before a supervised water activity, where site conditions and the event plan allow.
03 · Survival team journey
Combine the raft build with resource puzzles, communication challenges, team flags and a fictional cargo mission. Choose cooperative success or a friendly regatta format, followed by a debrief that connects the experience to work.
Suggested planning window: allow around 2–3 hours for a complete build, assessment and debrief. Water activities, larger groups and additional challenges may need more time. Your proposal confirms the schedule, staffing, equipment and inclusions.

01 · Brief
Your facilitator introduces the mission, boundaries and shared objective. Short connection activities help colleagues step into the challenge and understand how they can contribute.
02 · Plan
Teams consider their materials, sketch a concept and allocate roles. Agree how decisions will be made, how progress will be checked and what a successful result should look like.
03 · Learn
Thrill introduces the construction methods used in the session, including appropriate rope and lashing techniques. People practise under guidance before applying the methods to their team’s build.
04 · Build
Coordinate timber or poles, flotation components and ropes as specified for the program. Teams share tasks, check their work and adapt the design through discussion and feedback.
05 · Review
Explain the design and complete the facilitator-led assessment. Any water component requires a separate go-ahead, suitable conditions, equipment and participant briefing. A construction check alone does not authorise a launch.
06 · Reflect
Celebrate the shared result, review how decisions were made and identify one action to carry into the workplace. The raft becomes a memorable reference point for future collaboration.
What your team takes away
Instructions must be understood, responsibilities shared and assumptions checked. The task creates opportunities to notice who speaks, who listens and how the team uses different perspectives.
Leadership can move between the planner, the careful builder, the encourager and the person who spots a problem. Thrill can introduce rotating roles so participants experience different responsibilities.
Agree a small set of outcomes before the event: participation in decisions, clarity of handovers, response to feedback or completion of the shared brief. Use facilitator observations, a simple team review and agreed next actions to make the learning concrete.
Adventure starts with imagination
You do not need a waterfront venue to experience the design, resourcefulness and teamwork of raft building.
Thrill can bring an adapted construction challenge to offices, conference rooms and event venues across its service locations. We check floor protection, available space, door access, material handling and the proposed kit size before confirming the setup.
Teams can name their vessel, design a flag, pitch a rescue plan and demonstrate their thinking through a dry-land assessment. A full-sized build depends on the room; a more compact format can be discussed where space is limited.
For venues near a suitable waterway, a build-and-transfer format may be possible. Moving a completed raft, reaching the shoreline and running the water component must be planned separately. A nearby beach or hotel pool does not automatically make a site suitable.

Consider a sheltered harbour-side setting, a suitable conference venue or an indoor city event. Manly and Sydney’s coastal venues offer strong retreat possibilities, with the exact activity site assessed before booking.
Central Coast & Lake Macquarie
Bring the challenge to a conference lawn, function venue or approved lakeside setting. Combine practical construction with a relaxed coastal retreat and a shared debrief.
Hunter Valley
Raft construction can run as a dry-land challenge at a suitable hotel or conference venue. A water component is only proposed where a specific pool or waterway is approved for the activity.
Gold Coast & Brisbane
Plan a mobile indoor build or explore a suitable sheltered waterfront site. Gold Coast estuaries, Brisbane-area venues and resort grounds provide enquiry starting points, with access, current and conditions assessed individually.
Tweed, Kingscliff & Byron Bay
Add a hands-on challenge to your team getaway. Build at an approved venue or foreshore, with dry-land participation and a suitable weather alternative discussed from the start.
Sunshine Coast & Noosa
Explore conference spaces and sheltered-water settings for a team journey. Thrill reviews venue access, participant needs and the proposed water activity before confirming the event plan.

A rewarding finale, thoughtfully planned
For an approved on-water event, the plan covers the activity area, weather and water conditions, supervision, appropriate flotation equipment, participant briefing and emergency arrangements. Your facilitator confirms whether the planned water component can proceed.
Let us know about water confidence, swimming ability, mobility and access requirements during planning. Construction, design, observation and presenting roles can keep people involved without requiring everyone to paddle. Participation arrangements are agreed for the individual group.
Where the water component cannot proceed, use an agreed dry-land alternative or rescheduling arrangement. The raft challenge still offers a meaningful opportunity to practise planning, communication and shared decisions.

A different water experience
Interested in guided white-water rafting? Ask Thrill about a separately arranged adventure through an appropriate specialist operator. Purpose-built inflatable rafts, operator requirements and a separate itinerary apply; team-built rafts are not used on rapids.

No. The survival and rescue story is a fictional framework for corporate team building. It is not professional rescue training, emergency-response certification or an unsupported expedition.

Raft building involves constructing and assessing a team-made craft. Guided white-water rafting uses specialist equipment and operators on an appropriate course or river. They are separate experiences and are quoted accordingly.
